Contraceptive pills

Contraceptive pills, sometimes known as oral contraception or 'the pill', are taken daily. They are very effective at preventing unwanted pregnancy. And are a popular method - almost half of people using contraception have chosen a pill as their method.

There are 2 types; the progestogen only pill, also known as 'the mini pill' and the combined pill. Both types contain hormones.

Progestogen only pill

The progestogen only pill, also called the mini-pill or POP, is a pill you take every day. It contains only one hormone – progestogen. When you take it correctly, it’s a very effective method of contraception.

You might know the progestogen only pill by one of it's brand names, like Cerelle, Cerazette, Zelleta, Norgeston and Noriday.

It has very few health risks, so you can take it even if you have a history of thrombosis or have a BMI of over 35. The main drawback is that it can cause irregular bleeding.
