What should I do after a gonorrhoea infection?
If you have been diagnosed with gonorrhoea it is important that you get treatment to prevent you from developing any complications and also to stop you from passing the infection on to your sexual partners.
Treatment for gonorrhoea is an antibiotic tablet and an antibiotic injection. You will need to go to a sexual health clinic to receive this treatment. The clinic may also want to do another test after you have been treated to check that your infection has been cured.
It takes some time for the treatment to work, so it is important that you do not have sex until 7 days after you are treated.
If you have gonorrhoea you should tell your sexual partners and anyone else who you have had sex within the last 3 months. They need to have a test and may also require treatment. They may have gonorrhoea even if they do not have any symptoms. The clinic where you get your treatment can help you with this if you would like.
The best way to protect yourself from getting gonorrhoea again is to use condoms every time you have sex.
